Setting: Our bedroom. It has been raining all night, but despite the weather, the light is streaming through our yellow curtains. Epp lies next to me, Anna is nursing. I am sweaty after taking some Advil the night before, as I was sick all day Tuesday. Marta stirs in the next room and yells out:
Marta: Emme, kas sa tooks mulle barbit! [Mommy, would you bring me my barbie?]
Epp: Ma praegu ei saa tuua. Mine võta ise. [I can't bring it at the moment. Go get it yourself.]
A few moments pass.
Marta: Emme, ma ütlesin, et palun too mulle barbit! [Mommy, I said please bring the barbie to me.]
A few more moments pass.
Marta: Emme, ma olen küsinud kolm korda. Ma hoiatan, kui sa ei too barbit, siis ma saan kurjaks. [Mommy, I have asked three times. I am warning you, if you don't bring me my barbie, then I'll get angry.]
Justin: Ok, ok, I'll go get her barbie.
Justin gets up, looks around the room.
Justin: Where is the barbie, I don't see it?
Anna: Slurp, slurp.
Epp: It's in the cold room.
[Note: we call our front room upstairs the "cold room" because we didn't heat it during the winter]
Justin pulls himself out of bed, walks down the hall, and looks around the cold room, but he can't find barbie anywhere.
Justin: Marta, are you sure your barbie is in here? I can't find her.
Marta enters, climbs onto the bed in the cold room, lifts up a large pillow, and points down.
Marta: There she is!

What!!!
I think she owns the two of you...
Watch this...
Marta: ..Mimi will you get my Barbie?
Mimi: No I cannot get it now, you need to go get it.
Marta:I need my Barbie
Mimi: You need to go find her.
Marta: I will get angry if you don't get it.
Mimi: I will get angry if you speak to me that way again.
Marta: yelling get me Barbie.. blah blah....
Mimi: Closing the door to Marta's room.
Marta screaming
Mimi: ignoring her.
Marta: still screaming
Mimi: ..coming into her room.
Mimi: find the &^%&% (just thinking bad words) Barbie and stop this yelling or I will take every Barbie you have away for two days, and if you continue to behave this way I will add one day for every outburst!
Mimi: ..do you understand me!
Marta: This part I cannot role play, but I would bet, knowing Marta, that she would have angerly pulled the covers over her head and sulked, or stomped into the "cold room" and found her Barbie said something (in an angry tone) like.. "here I found it" and went back to bed.
Sometime when all had calmed down we would have a talk about her terrible behavior, and the apology that was needed.
What I am trying to say here is this is a power struggle over Barbie..one day it will be over the use of the car or how late she may she stay out with her friends.
Little children little battles..big children(teenagers)
big battles...
No preaching here, just the wisdom of a 60 something Mother/ Mimi...
We try to avoid power struggles. It perhaps has both good and bad sides.
But at least we have a good sense of humor.
;)

You're going to need that humor if she continues to boss you around in that way.
It was a very funny story especially the part where Barbie was hidden in the the cold room.
Like Justin or anyone would have known to look under that pillow..
Oh...my Marta!
It's actually pretty unusual that Marta would do something like this. Typically, she is whiny in the morning and asks if I can carry her to the toilet (where she usually falls asleep until I get her up and bring her back upstairs).
