laulupidu -- song festival
On Saturday and Sunday, Marta and I attended the Estonian Song and Dance Festival, which is held every five years. The first one was in 1869. Here's a shot of Marta playing with new friends in national costumes on the first day:
Marta loves the procession of singers on the first day. I guess music and beautiful costumes and crowds of happy people are paradise for a little girl:
The key to watching Marta is keeping her on a long leash. I let, or perhaps tolerated, her as she made friends with people maybe five or six or 15 times her age. Here she is schmoozing with what was, essentially, the Estonian cast of Friends. Marta makes friends everywhere. I am envious in a way:
Saturday was July 4th. I bought Marta an Estonian-American flag pin to commemorate Independence Day. Marta knows the colors of both flags. She also knows the American President, Rock Obama well. She saw his photo on a newspaper and pointed it out to me, "Rock Obama, Rock Obama!":
To give you an idea of the size of the event. I read 100,000 people, but it could have been more:
Here is Marta towards the end of the first evening with Merit, Tiia, Martti, and Heili. No, Marta did not consume any A. Le Coq beer. She crashed on my shoulders about half an hour later, and slept for 10 hours:
The next morning, Marta and I walked from Tiia's place in downtown Tallinn to the Song Festival Grounds. We passed by Kadriorg, the 18th century palace of Peter the Great. Marta really loved it. They were playing classical music there for the full effect:
Marta was away from sister Anna all weekend. But she found little substitutes along the way. During the festival on Sunday she befriended little Karoliine, who is a month or two younger than Anna. They really got along, though I had to pry them apart a few times:
