planet bedrock

When I was a kid, I thought The Flintstones was the most boring show on TV, save M.A.S.H. If there was anything that could kill the pleasure of watching Shirt Tales or The Snorks, it was Fred and Wilma Flintstone's sexual politics.

Here in Estonia there is a channel called Boomerang that broadcasts endless hours of Scooby Doo, Tom and Jerry, Dastardly and Muttly, Huckleberry Hound, Snagglepuss, and The Yogi Bear Show.

And of all the old cartoons, I have found I like The Flintstones the best! I like how Wilma and Betty are portrayed as shopaholics burdened by lazy and argumentative husbands. And I like how Fred and Barney are portrayed as clueless guys who sit around playing poker and thinking up get-rich-quick schemes.

Then there's all of the old pop culture inside jokes. Yesterday Wilma went to see a movie starring 'Rock Pile' (Rock Hudson) and 'Gary Granite' (Cary Grant). And of course, the Royal Order of the Water Buffalos. The show is very creative.

So I guess the Flintstones are an acquired taste. Sort of like perrier.
